Bulgaria
Why do clients choose Bulgaria?
Bulgaria combines an EU and Schengen location with a 10% flat rate on personal and corporate income, low company-formation and living costs, and clear residency routes. For most clients it is the most practical low-tax base inside the EU rather than an offshore arrangement. Read Why Bulgaria.
Who is Bulgaria usually suitable for?
Founders, freelancers, digital nomads, sole traders, consultants, business owners and other internationally mobile people, particularly those who earn largely online or across borders. Whether it suits you depends on your income, where you currently live and your family situation, which we assess before recommending anything.
Do I need to move to Bulgaria permanently?
Not necessarily. Our relocation service is only for clients who actually want to move their home to Bulgaria, and it is not required to form a Bulgarian company, use the 10/10/10 Method™ or add banking. The 10% personal-tax position is separate and depends on whether you establish Bulgarian tax residence under the applicable rules, including factors such as days and your centre of vital interests.
How much time do I need to spend in Bulgaria?
It depends on the tax position you are aiming for. Tax residency turns on factors such as the days you spend in a country and where your centre of vital interests sits, not a single fixed number. See our guide to the 183-day rule.
Can my spouse or family move with me?
In most cases yes — family members can often be included through the appropriate residency route. We confirm eligibility and handle the documentation for the whole family together.
Where do most of your clients live in Bulgaria?
Sofia is the most common base, with Plovdiv and Bansko also popular depending on lifestyle and budget. Read our Sofia, Plovdiv and Bansko guide.
Residency
How does Bulgarian residency work?
Most clients begin with a long-stay visa and a residence permit under a qualifying route, renewed over time, with permanent residency and eventually citizenship available on a longer timeline. See our residency service.
How long does a Bulgarian residency application take?
Timelines depend on the route, your documentation and appointment availability. We give you a realistic timeline in your plan once we understand your circumstances.
What is your Bulgarian residency success rate?
We currently have a 100% success rate on completed Bulgarian residency applications for qualifying clients. We review eligibility before proceeding and cannot guarantee the outcome of a future application.
How many residency applications have you handled?
We have worked with 180+ clients since 2020, and residency is one of the most common parts of the setups we handle. We assess eligibility for every applicant before proceeding.
Is Bulgarian residency the same as Bulgarian tax residency?
No. Holding a residence permit does not by itself make you tax resident — the two are assessed on different tests. Read residency vs tax residency.
Does obtaining Bulgarian residency automatically end my tax residence elsewhere?
No. You remain tax resident in another country until you actually meet the rules for ceasing residence there, which usually means changing your days, ties and centre of vital interests. We plan the exit as carefully as the arrival. More on this.
Can you help me understand the rules in the country I am leaving?
Yes, at a practical level. We are most familiar with common departure countries such as the UK, and work alongside local advisers where specialist advice is needed. See our guide on leaving the UK for Bulgaria.
Tax & companies
How does Bulgaria's 10% tax rate work?
Bulgaria applies a flat 10% rate to both personal and corporate income, with a 5% rate on dividends. How it applies to you depends on how you draw income and your wider position. See our tax strategy service, or the 10% flat tax guide.
Is Bulgaria's 10% tax available to everyone?
No. Simply owning a Bulgarian company does not give you a 10% personal tax position. It depends on becoming genuinely Bulgarian tax resident and structuring things correctly — which is exactly what we assess and set up.
Do I need a Bulgarian company?
Not always. Some clients need a company, others only residency, and some both. We recommend the lightest structure that achieves what you actually need.
Can I keep my existing company?
Sometimes, depending on where it is and how it is taxed. Keeping an overseas company can create issues such as controlled-foreign-company rules, so we review it before recommending whether to keep, restructure or replace it.
How long does it take to form a Bulgarian company?
A Bulgarian company can be formed in a matter of days once documents are ready; our fastest this year was four working days. See our company formation guide.
How much experience do you have setting up Bulgarian companies?
We have formed 150+ Bulgarian companies for clients since 2020.
What size businesses do you work with?
Everyone from sole traders to established owner-managed companies. Client businesses structured through Bulgaria currently represent more than €75m in annual revenue, but there is no minimum — suitability is about fit, not size.
Banking
Can Sovereignty Global help me open a Bulgarian bank account?
Yes. We help clients open Bulgarian personal and business accounts, including preparing the KYC and source-of-funds documentation banks expect. See our banking service.
Do you also arrange banking outside Bulgaria?
Yes. Where it adds useful flexibility, we arrange Georgian accounts alongside Bulgarian ones for suitable clients. Read about Georgian banking for non-residents.
How many banking relationships have you arranged?
We have secured 280+ banking relationships across Bulgaria and Georgia for clients.
Can you guarantee that a bank will approve my application?
No. All account openings remain subject to the bank’s own compliance and approval process. What we do is prepare your application properly so it has the best possible chance of success.
Why might I need more than one bank account?
Multiple accounts add resilience and multi-currency flexibility, and reduce the risk of a single account freeze disrupting everything. More on banking across borders.
Do I need to travel to open my accounts?
It depends on the bank. Some allow remote onboarding; others require a visit in person. We tell you which applies before you start, so you can plan any travel.

180+ clients · 150+ companies · 280+ banking relationships · 100% residency success rate
What happens after I contact you?
A short consultation to understand your situation, a review of what fits and whether Bulgaria makes sense, a proposed setup with scope and cost (see our published fees), then onboarding if you decide to go ahead. See how we work.
What should I have ready for the first consultation?
Nothing formal, but it helps to know your current country of residence, nationality, how you earn, any company details, where you would like to move and your family situation.
How long does the whole process take?
A company can be ready in days; residency and banking take longer and depend on documentation and provider timelines. We give you a realistic end-to-end timeline in your plan.
How much does it cost to work with Sovereignty Global?
Packages start at €3,995 and single services from €495. Third-party costs are passed on at cost. See pricing →
Do you provide ongoing support after the move?
Yes. Accounting, filings, renewals and general administration can stay with us, so your structure keeps working after it is set up.
What happens if Bulgaria isn't right for me?
Then we will tell you. We establish suitability before recommending a setup, so the first conversation is about whether this genuinely fits — not a sales pitch.
